To get a PhD in Russian lit. It gave me the confidence to go on and do other things I would have been afraid to try otherwise, and I acquired a lot of skills that have proven invaluable.

I don't know what the smartest decision I ever made is.

I know the happiest decision I ever made was giving immediate notice to my employers before walking out of my job in rural Japan. I cycled home, picked up my bags, took them by train to Tokyo, met my girlfriend and flew back to the UK on a plane ticket I had secretly booked a month before.

After a year of really awful treatment (it compares with Amelie Nothomb had to put up with in Stupeur et Tremblements) this was sweet revenge on the worst, most oppressive employers I have ever had the misfortune to work under.

If I never have another chance to "stick it to the man" this one shot will be enough to last me my lifetime.

Never, ever work for a Japanese company. Especially not one in rural Japan.
