I've never been on this forum before and this is a seriously newbie question but when I started here a few years ago I read a lot of warnings about Flash to the effect that it wasnt possible to optimise websites that used it. As a result I totally avoided it when buying templates and still do (I only compete in the organic serps) as I didnt want to take any risk of shackling any new sites ability to rank but I'm not sure if I sold myself short as I see a few websites that appear to use Flash or use some Flash elements ranking quite well.
Can anyone give me the complete lowdown?
Should I totally avoid it?
Can a site that uses it be optimised.
Is the whole site usually Flash or are just a few elements on the page Flash and does that present problems for seo.
If its only on part of the site will the rest of the non Flash bits optimise OK?
Can I compete in the serps if I do use a Flash template?

The best solution is always a site where the Flash elements are contained within an HTML page. That is a separate HTML page for each one conataining Flash contents.

A pure Flash Web site can also work, but you need to anchor your texts and links outside the Flash as well.
