Can you view the ActionScript and frames of an .swf file? If so how? I had a feeling you need the .fla file. any ideas?

Welcome to WebmasterWorld lowe_22
There is a bit of software called Imperator that converts swf to fla, and with all the actions too. It will only work on swfs that were created in Flash MX 6 and up, so it's no good on anything made with third party editors.

On many of the Flash cracking software, the operation is noit smooth and you cannot recreate the original FLA file.

Just out of curiousity, why do you need to open SWF file. Don't you have the original FLA file? ;)
