Flash Actionscript vs. tweening on slower machines

Does actionscript make a slow computer render a flash movie slower?

As far as using actionscript over tweening for movement, etc. I know that actionscripting can reduce the file sizes considerably.

However, can actionscript use up a lot of resources on an older, slower computer, therefore making tweening the preferred method?

Can actionscript overwhelm a system's resources and crash an older machine (or even a newer machine that's severely-multitasking like mine is right now)?

Can anyone give me insight about this? Taking file size, % of slow-machine owners, etc. into account.

I did a couple of presentations -laptop and had to rely on clients PC's and yes both animation via graphical manipulation/AS brought their systems to a crawl.
