In Firefox Nightly Mozilla says it's experimenting with a "new capability to automatically generate alt-text for images using a fully private on-device AI model." It's part of Firefox's built-in editor for PDFs.

It's expecting to roll this out with V130 it's automatically generate alt text.

Our alt text generator is far from perfect, but we want to take an iterative approach and improve it in the open. The inference engine has already landed in Firefox Nightly as a new ml component along with an initial documentation page.

Given how useless "AI" generated alt text is where I see it (LinkedIn, some stock photo type sites) I am not optimistic!

I think with this kind of system the software should provide an accuracy value. If it falls below a certain threshold it will be ignored. It's better to not provide a desription than a false description.
