Is it possible to have different FireFox versions on one PC?

Specifically versions FF1.5 and FF3

I have FF1.5 installed on a machine for testing (yes, it's way old, but anyway...). I would also like to install the latest FF3 on the same machine and still keep F1.5 available. Is it ok to simply install into a different folder?

May be a simple answer - it's just that I really don't want to stuff up the old FF.

Is this possible? Any known problems?

I read in a really old thread [webmasterworld.com] something about profiles, but I see no mention of profiles in more recent versions?

Thanks for any info.

Run a bunch of virtual machines and put a different version in each. That way you don't mess up your primary install.

I usually get slapped down pointing out search engine parameters that could help folks.
But, I'll do it again, anyway.

A feller might seek information on
"How to install Firefox2 together with firefox3 on linux".

And/or, a feller might seek information on
"Installing Firefox 3 (Gran Paradiso Alphas) on Fedora"

Even if you are unfortunate to _not_ be running linux, you'll see the solution involves installing each Firefox in a different (sub)directory -- using the firefox profile manager to create a unique profile for each -- and creating a unique clickable object on the desktop for each.

I did it this last weekend: putting Firefox 3 on a Mandriva box that already had FF2 installed. Works a treat! There's no interaction ... even with both up at the same time.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I forgot to mention, I'm running Windows - but yes, your suggestion to create separate install directories and profiles does apply to Windows too.

You can apparently then create a shortcut like:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3\firefox.exe -P firefox3

To auto load the appropriate profile for the version of Firefox you are running.

HOWEVER, I have read that (on Windows) you still can't run multiple versions of Firefox at-the-same-time!? Having to close one version before opening another?! Can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case, then it's not great for testing - although I've not yet tried this myself. So, as bill suggests, may be best to run in a virtual machine after all.
