This US time by 2.30/3pm FF forced fed me the last update to FF 3.0.4

A few min later I was checking one of my scripts in FF
And then big time surprise most back ground where not showing up and of course text in reverse where not in sight
I spent a big deal of time figuring what could have gone wrong
Knowing that it still works A OK, in IE and Safari

Up to a few minutes ago I did not figured it out until I clicked on a WebmasterWorld auto-notification
FF is only showing on the left hand side the post number
That’s it NOTHING ELSE
Bug in FF?

Probably a bug in the updater.

Uninstall 3.0.4, then download the whole 3.0.4 installation file from mozilla.com and install it.

If that doesn't work, then you can uninstall 3.0.4, go get the old 2.x version from Mozilla, and re-install that.

As long as you DO NOT check the "Remove my personalizations and customizations" checkbox, this should have no effect on your bookmarks, although some version problems with extensions and themes may occur.

I wish they'd make their updaters more bullet-proof, because it seems like major version upgrades break more than a small number of users' installs. But I've never had a problem with the "remove-old, install-new" approach.

Jim, just did it
but to no avail
I do not even see the bottom "reply" bar
only the sign # and the post number
so I had to revert to IE to reply to your post!

what's wrong?
thanks

<edit>looks I am not alone, just G for "firefox 3.0.4 problems"

WebmasterWorld css: Are you sure that you use for background
background-color: and not only background which is OK in IE and Safari but not FF?

henry0,

You might also want to try starting Firefox from the "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)" link in your Start Menu to rule out problems with add-ons.

> WebmasterWorld css: Are you sure that you use for background ...

If you suspect a problem with the WebmasterWorld coding, please use the "Report a problem" link at the bottom of the page here.

However, like many people, I've been using 3.0.4 since the day it was released, and have no trouble at all -- here at WebmasterWorld, or at any other Web site. Although there are undoubtedly hundreds of people who've had problems with it, there are probably somewhere near a million who have had no trouble at all. So it's not that there are "No problems" but rather that there are few. That's no consolation when you're one of the ones who's affected, but this is not a case of "This version should not be loaded!"

If running Firefox in Safe Mode doesn't change or fix the problem, then copy your profile so you don't lose your bookmarks, do a complete un-install, re-boot, clean your registry, then re-install. After testing, shut down Firefox and then copy the bookmarks and bookmark backups files from your old profile image back to the new profile to restore your bookmarks. You may also want to back-up and restore the .rdf files that define customizations to your add-ons and toolbars as well as your bookmarks.

I hope this helps!

No way!

Tried in FF safe mode
even tried in Wins safe mode to uninstall and reinstall from a fresh d-load

More and more I checked my wife's machine
she has an old FF (FF 2.0 as it was, she never changed anything from the initial settings)
Same result I can't see any left hand nav from WebmasterWorld other than post number.

Out of curiosity I disabled wins FireWall and my AV
but to no avail
I am totally clue less!
unless it comes from an new Comcast new setup (I doubt)

If you are having all these problems with WebmasterWorld from two different versions of Firefox, then it is not a problem with Firefox. And since I'm making this post with Firefox, and having no trouble with Firefox, that's a further data point.

If you are having trouble with other sites, or can go and find trouble on other sites, and you've tested with and without your anti-virus and firewall, then it *is* likely something to do with Comcast. I'm not sure if they usef proxy servers like AOL and Earthlink, but you could access one of your own sites, go look at the raw server logs, and find out... If "your own" IP address seems to change in the logs, then likely they are proxying client connections. Try completely-flushing your browser cache using Tools->Options->Advanced->Offline Storage->Clear Now.

If you have problems only with WebmasterWorld, try clearing your WebmasterWorld cookie using the WebmasterWorld control panel. Then flush your browser cache again.

Sorry you're having so much trouble!

OK I was correct when assuming a Comcast problem as such am doomed too; no fix so far, and presently IE is not a secured option...
I would like hearing from other Comcast user.

Found a few posts on FF "assistence" and comcast
both related to 3.0.4
those on FF are dated 12/08
It pretty much reads as:
Even their own comcast page (LOL)
does not load properly, back gounds buttons and other graphics are mosly "no show"

You might want to see what is happening with those requests by using a handy-dandy headers checker add-on: Are requests for images and css returning 404, 410, 403, inappropriate 502, 503, 504, 505, 400, 405, 406, 412, 300 or 304, a 200-OK with no content-body, or what? Not that it would give you a fix, but it would be very interesting to know.

While waiting, I'd also suggest a thorough malware scan of all of the machines on your network... Use Ad-aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Live Safety Scanner, and free scanners from as many reputable anti-malware companies as you know.

Thanks, so far .. not so good!
same stuff
I will again contact them

If anyone get a spare moment I'll love learning about how to use "Live HTTP headers"
I have been pulling my hairs without any result
I did not figure how to use it :)

  • Click on the Live Headers button in the Firefox search bar. This will open a new window for the headers display.
  • If you don't have an icon, you can either 'customize' your search bar to include it, or just click on the menu item in the "Tools" menu to open the headers display window.
  • Flush your browser cache using Tools->Clear Private Data, so that your browser will request all pages and included objects from your server, and not use previously-cached copies.
  • Load a page that you've been having trouble with.
  • Look at the Live HTTP Headers display. You will see the browser's request for each object, followed by the server response.
  • Make sure that each server response indicates a 200-OK server status for each browser request. If not, then the other items in the displayed browser requests and server responses need investigation, and we can talk about that.

Be sure to keep flushing your browser cache after each page is loaded and you've analyzed the headers; Otherwise, you'll likely see a bunch of 304-Not Modified server responses as the server confirms to the browser that it should use cached copies instead of sending the browser any new data.

In fact, depending on how the cache controls are configured on the server, it's possible the browser won't send *any* requests to the server when a page has already been loaded and cached.

There's only a few key lines in all of that you will need to look at.

Not to turn this into the firefox add-ons thread, but you can exclude requests for images, or other undesirable files using the "exclude urls with regexp" option in livehttpheaders config.

And on caching, if you use the web developer toolbar too, you can instantly disable the cache to avoid the 304 not modified responses.

NO reply from Comcast mail and forum… I know, I was not really expecting anything.

I was the cofounder of a quite well known PC tech forum and many times praised by the Langa’s newsletter. I let it go years ago, but kept the habit of running a bunch of anti AV software and scanners.
I even went on line and did a check online with the competitors of my tools.
Next I am going to run manually mrt.exe (the MS tool)
However I am very confident that I am not infected.
Although up to maybe two weeks ago it used to work fine, so I still don’t know what’s happening
I will also as per J.Morgan try my machine on a non Comcast connection.

But keep in mind that my researches show that I am not alone
I am going to post in “general” to ask if anyone with Comcast did notice that strange problem

My question was "are you using Comcast?"

I've only skimmed this thread so apologies if the following have been suggested...

    Perform the following tests.
    1) Turn off javascript and refresh page.
    2) Save page in FF and try viewing it in IE and vice-versa.

It sounds like a buggy filter is responsible. Something like a software firewall, advert suppressor, something of that sort, that is adjusting the source code. In order to check this, you'll need to compare the source code of a single page from two installations, one which works and one that doesn't (both must be Firefox, ideally, the same version).

henry0, Comcast was sanctioned by the FCC earlier this year for their practices. If you can't get any love from support, file a complaint with the FCC.

Previous threads on Comcast problems [google.com].

    Thanks,
Kaled, I tried both of your suggestions, the save and open in IE does not show the CSS background-color and reverse texts.

Somehow "off this thread record": Yes I will file a complaint.
I use them for TV and the most expensive tier for my web conn
That's too much $ for zero customer service!

If I knew someone close by me willing to share half a T1, I'll do it in a heartbeat

I found that no other browser but IE is able to correctly display my cart FCKeditor.
so it looks like everything using JS, DHTML etc.. are disabled

No, I don't have Comcast, but was implying that FF 3.0.5 had just been released and it might have solved the issue.
