.eml files are usually Outlook Express e-mail messages.

What are you doing exactly when this error appears? What is the exact error message?

You might want to check Firefox's Tools->Options->Main->Startup settings. See if this "readme.eml" path is present in the "Home page" box and if so, either set Firefox to start with a blank page, or specify a valid Home page instead of readme.eml.

Also, be sure to download Firefox only from www.mozilla.com -- Versions downloaded from elsewhere on the Web may be "hacked." If the main "international version" of Firefox doesn't support your language, have a look at www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html for additional localized versions.

You haven't bothered to tell us the steps, if any, you've taken to address this problem, so it's hard to give more advice.

Try uninstalling FF and re-installing from scratch. That's worked for me with some recent problems.

Also, Firefox/3.1 is a Beta version. It is intended only for people testing Firefox/3 itself. If you want to use Firefox for surfing the Web, then install the latest tested production release, Firefox/3.0.4 [mozilla.com].
