I am surprised I can not figure out how to add custom search engines to the search box on Firefox? How does one do that? Or edit the lame defaults on the existing ones?

Open up Firefox help (from the menu, Help > Help Contents) and type "Searching" into the Search box on the right. The very first help topic that pops up in the left hand navigation of the help window explains it in detail.
