FireBug, great add-on, but

.. I have installed and uninstalled loads of times as it's so invaluable (especially for tracking those CSS specificity issues) but it soo slows down FF

pages are slow to load, hovers (normal link ones) are slow to activate, tab change can take an eternity memory usage is 2 x what it normally is

are there any tweaks out there or anything which would help deactivate it unless you actually request it - I take it it works away in the background, even when not in use, because of the error reporting..

OK... so why is it always the way, ask a question , find the answer very soon afterwards :o

Instead of clicking on the "bug" I went through the tools menu and found that there is a "disable" or "enable for this page" function already, should've known really :)

Which version of FireBug are you running? If I click on the "bug" I can disable for the page I am on in the context menu that drops down ...

I never knew that...that's actually quite useful.

coop it's 1.05..

if I have it disabled (now that I know how to ;) yes I get the "enable again" menu when I click the bug,

but if it's already enabled I do NOT get the "disable" or a drop down, simply from clicking the bug, am I still missing something?

I'm running 1.05 as well, but either we aren't connecting in our communication here or it is working differently for each of us. I'll do my best to describe what I see here ...

In the lower right corner of the Firefox browser interface there is a green circle with a white checkmark in it. It is located just to the left of the lower-right window resize handle. Clicking on this green circle acts like a Firebug toggle switch for me, opening a horizontal panel in the lower section of my browser window. If I click the green circle again, the Firebug interface closes up and I'm back to the normal browser interface.

Once I click the green button to open the Firebug panel the "bug" is in the upper left corner of the Firebug panel in the horizontal pane in the lower part of my browser interface. Left clicking the bug brings up a context menu where I can "Disable Firebug", "Disable Firebug for <domain name>" and some more options.

I'm wondering if you don't have a conflicting add-on or something here ... ? By the way, there are some great tutorials and even video tutorials on the Firebug home page > Documentation link.

stoutfiles, you and me both!

coop many thanks, I did not notice the icon down the bottom (3 others down there!) once you describe that I get exactly what you say, only mine was greyed out as I'd already disabled it!

I had the "bug" set up in my web dev toolbar, via customizing the toolbar which simply opens new window, I prefer the pane docked so will lose my bug and use the icon instead

now.. going back outside, it's hot here today for a change, I had to come in to cool down will read the documentation later too.

it's the simple things in life.. {o}

It's much like how your symptoms miraculously disappear as soon as you're at the doctor's office.
