In about:config I found image.animation_mode but it's a string value. What value should I set?

The default value is "normal", and you can change it to either "once" or "none" (both self-explanatory!) Perfect for calming down those agitated, err, I mean animated GIFs.

You can also use the AniDisable extension from update.mozilla.org.

Thanks.... I've set it to none

Not sure that once is self-explanatory though.

'Once' just means that the image will do its animation once only (i.e. it won't loop endlessly).

When set to once the GIF will animate once but not loop, no matter what the website has specified.

Slightly less annoying than normal, but not as nice a browsing experience as none *shrug*
