A website is only accessible via www.domain.com; a server header checker tool is showing a ... DNS Error for domain.com; IE is delivering for domain.com a NOT FOUND message BUT FF 2.0.0.6 is automatically switiching to www.domain.com and displaying the page!

Any explanations?

I think that what's happening is that a search is being conducted, through Google, for example.com and the first result is being followed (www.example.com).

Search Google for example.com (i.e. your own example domain name) and press "I'm feeling lucky"

Thanks for the idea: I have now tested 2 cases with IE and FF:

a) If the error is "11004 [11004] Valid name, no data record (check DNS setup)" IE is searching via Google for domain.com and presenting SERPs

b) If the error is "11001 [11001] Host not found" IE is also searching via Google for domain.com and presenting SERPs

If the URL ist entered as http://example.com IE is showing in both cases "Page not found"

FF is presenting in both cases of errors and URLs the pages.

[edit reason] switch to example.com - it can never be owned [/edit]
