I have some mp3's on my page that are selected from a JavaScript menu that play fine in IE, but Firefox insist's that I don't have the proper plugin for to play in Firefox. It also identifies it as an unknown plugin and can't find or suggest one for me to install. I've noticed that the extensions for Media Player do not contain the extension mp3. Is there a way to add the extension? Or do I need to come up with some other JS to deliver the tunes? Or do I need to convert my songs into a playlist so that the it will play using the m3u extension which Firefox does recognize?

Quicktime loves to associate itself as the plugin for MP3s. I'm using Firefox 2.0 RC2 and you can change a file's options but not choose which plugin in the browser itself in regards to how a file should be handled.

Windows Media Player files require a "Netscape" plugin to work. Linky linky...
[microsoft.com...]

They simply have inconveniently left it as "Netscape" and not updated their page to let people know it's also for Firefox.

Does this help?
