Firefox: new tab for links that want a new window?

Hello

I wanted to make it so that when a link opened a new window, it would instead open a new tab. So I searched in about:config, and changed browser.tabs.opentabfor.windowopen to true, because by its name this sounds like it is just what I'm looking for. But it didn't work. So I closed FF and reopened, and still didn't work.

Can anyone help?

No, I mean, I wanted to make it when *I* click a link in *my* browser (FF, which has the tabbing feature), it will open a tab instead of a new window.

You need the 'tabbrowser preferences' extension.

Then select Tools > options > tabbed browsing

That's how I did it and very pleased I am too.

Ah, that must be what's missing.

How ever, I can get version 1.1.1 from addons.update.mozilla.org, or version 1.2.2 from [pryan.org...]

For now I'm downloading the old version from mozilla.org because I don't trust the other source. What do you think? Is there even such thing as tabbrowser preferences version 1.2.2?

I just installed 1.1.1 and it's amazing. I've only had Firefox for like 3 days (and this is the first extention I download) and I'm in love with it.

I used to be a fan of Tabbrowser Preferences and Tab Browser Extension, but I no longer use either of them. There are better ways to use tabs in my opinion.

It's been argued that the Tab Browser Extension has bugs and that it changes your FF installation in ways that Mozilla hadn't intended. It certainly has a lot of options, but I just found it confusing and poorly documented.

Tabbrowser Preferences may have been useful in older versions of FF, but you can recreate much of what it offers by using the Mozilla tabbed browsing tweak recommendations:

• Reveal More Tab/Window Options [mozilla.org]
  
• Decide Which New Windows to Block [mozilla.org]
  
• Disable Other JavaScript Window Features [mozilla.org]
  
• Remove the Close Button from the Tab Bar [mozilla.org]

I also add the SessionSaver [extensionsmirror.nl], Tab Clicking Options [twanno.mozdev.org], Undo Close Tab [extensionroom.mozdev.org] and miniT [v2studio.com] extensions and then I find that I have almost all the same tabbed browsing features that Opera has.

I might be wrong, but what isn't what you're doing just adding by hand the options that Trabbrowser Preferences give you?

And who cares about the close tabs button? :D

I guess you have to ask yourself what benefits Tabbrowser Preferences offer you over the Mozilla recommended customizations. I don't see any. Why add an extension if you can do it yourself?

The other extensions are just preferences I find useful.

If you have a three button mouse, a click on a link with the middle button will open the link in a new tab.

My mouse is a very old blue Microsoft Home mouse, which means it's like 6 years old. In other words no, it doesn't have three buttons. =)
