Hello,
A friend of mine has a site that's pretty well installed in google. She insists that right after submitting specifically to google.ch, she began to get messages from Swiss people. Is it seriously possible that her site now shows up better on google.ch because she submitted there? I thought it was all one big database!

Louponne, what language is that site in, where is it hosted, and to which country is it assigned in Google's index?

We've discussed this before - I have never noted a difference in google's ranking, depending on hosting.

How to know?

The local Google sites offer the option to search only sites from the respective country.
Results are filtered for location of hosting and ccTLD.

Are you sure about this?

Yes, the criteria for being included in that search option are: IP AND/OR ccTLD.

But back to Louponne's question.
Does the content relate directly to Switzerland?

Basically I'm not seeing any possible explanation and would tend to put that down to other factors outside of that Google submission.

First question: does it show up better on google.ch at all?

Try out: [google.ch...]

I did try, and I don't see any difference whatsoever. I think it's just a coincidence - she submitted, and in the week after that, she received a flurry of messages. So of course she assumes, whatever I say, that that was cause & effect!

Louponne - just tell her it's not that simple. Wish it was ;-) Just coincidence - especially since it was just a week! You can give her a link to this discussion in order to convince her ;-)

Can using a meta 'language' tag have an effect in the above instance?

Normally: yes. In Switserland this would be de-CH, it-CH or fr-CH and that's hihgly unlikely.

But why did she submit in Switserland anyway?

Does she have raw logfiles so you could trace those Swiss referrals?

Very good point. Frankly, I haven't done any raw log file analysis for a couple of years (I know, I know, shame on me!). I have an old copy of WebTrends (4.5, I think) that should obviously now be replaced by something more current. Anyone know of an url where current log analyzers are, um analyzed?

Try this thread in Tracking [webmasterworld.com]

The reason I'm asking is that there is a chance Google might have incidentally put the site into their results from Switzerland, which would explain a sudden rise in referrals.
But, as HitProf suggests, without logfile anlysis we'll never know.

It's worth to note however that generally there's no need and no sense in extra submitting sites to local Google sites.
It is all one index, which get's filtered according to the users options.

What does that mean?

(thanks for the link to the tracking thread :)
