Noticed that Lycos opened a swedish version of HotBot today. [hotbot.lycos.se...]
Why? Maby because they are not happy with their partner www.spray.se who has not paid up yet and want to put some preassure on spray?
Earlier in this discussion it was stated that Entireweb is based on a commercially available script from Curry Guide. This has turned out to be wrong.
I have just had a long telephone conversation with the creator of Webbas - Mr Lars Holmström, 60, a retired programmer and businessman from Falkenberg Sweden now living in England, who was a bit perturbed over what had been written here and was anxious to have the record set straight.
He still owns part of ECE Data of Falkenberg, which he founded 15 years ago, but has sold the majority and retired as CEO. He is third from left in the top row here [ecedata.se]. He has programmed in Fortran since before there were operating systems. Webbas is his current preoccupation and he has spent 4 years developing it.
The whole thing started 7-8 years ago when he bought a custom made 8-channel transputer from the whizz-kids behind Fast Search, then at the University of Trondheim. Webbas is his own development along the same basic concept behind Fast, i.e. that piece of hardware which makes parallell databases possible. In the version used by Entireweb Webbas indexes meta only and nothing else, but it can be set to full text indexing. The thing is that the whole engine can be run from one single server, with 24 db:s of 2 Gb each running in parallell. More servers can be added and he claims that there is no upward limit for the size of the index. It is in other words very inexpensive to own and operate. And extremely fast according to Mr Holmström.
Marcus Andersson, 22, the owner of WorldLight.com AB who operate Entireweb, is a locally well known kid in the province of Halland, "Halmstad's Bill Gates" to quote a local e-zine [chili.se]. He offered to beta test Wwbbas for the year ending 31 March 2001. What happens after that is anybody's guess, but Mr Holmström has indicated to me he would like to see a license fee paid.
The people behind WorldLight have enganged in spamming techniques - here and elsewhere - to generate interest for their site and it seems to me that Mr Holmström has been dragged into the ensuing controversy through no wrongdoing of his own. I am therefore happy to set the record straight.

They had a second search with Curry guides, the most common search clone around. Those two facts, lead us to believe that this was just a case of spamming.
It sounded to good to be true that they had developed their own technology and was residing in a small west coast town in Sweden.
I am happy that that they are legit and whish them all luck. Hopefully they learned to be honest when posting in the fora where the pros hang. If they had, they would never got bashed.
I will update the other forum with the information that you stated here, Jan, thanks again!
I have been submitting a site to Allt, and for several months there was a notice saying that the site is under construction, they are experimenting a new type of engine. Afterwards I could not submit the URLs any more, since there was no link that would provide a submission possibility, moreover there was no way to contact the editors.
Has anyone else noticed it? Is there a solution?
Thank you,
Andrea
Koll will not live in its present form. Maby it will be bought by one of the portals. There is talk, and the owner, Bonnier has paid Inktomi to the end of the year, so they really want to get rid of it.
Had a meeting with Lycos/HotBot/Spray last week. HotBot will keep Inktomi and will be marketed separately. As I reported they are opening 8 european versions this year and hope to attract a younger audience.
Lycos will be closed in favor of Spray, as agreed between the two companies last year. The same goes for France.
[hotbot.lycos.se...] Marketing budget is not set yet, but they expect to go out big during 2001.
That goes for major portal www.everyday.se , also Inktomi driven.
Both deliver traffic and should be on your list.
Notice that Google has become one of the most important SEs in Sweden during the last three months. After talking to AV, I think that it is the lojal experienced users from AV that is now using Google.
Is Chello Swedish????? Didn't know that. I thought they were an ISP somewhere out there. Are you sure?
Re Google. They topped my referral statistics for February for the first time ever, so I agree. No changes in sites that could possibly account for this sudden surge. Outclassed all others! They are coming here in a big way, riding on a wave of favourable publicity. Am telling all my customers, as I am sure you are already doing. (Not mine, yours ;) )
