Are there any reasonably priced translation services (human, no machine) that are in the know about seo?

I've looked around the last week and there seems to be 2 types of services: the ultra expensive ($50-$250usd) per page, and those that just crank out pages with no thought to keywords - just pure translation. Is there something in the middle that isn't quite so expensive, and more oriented to seo and keyword placement?

I can do it from Czech to English or English to Czech. Price by arrangement. A single page with a lot of text I can do for $10 dollars. A site can be for less.

If you consider $50 for a properly optimized page to be in the ultra expensive range, I think that might rule out western Europe, at least as far as people running a legitimate business are concerned. Free lance people without a registered company plus Central and Eastern Europe would still be a possibillity, as evidenced by backus' offer. What languages did you have in mind?

I checked the site and notice that you charge $0.055 per word from English into the main European languages and up to $0.09 for the lesser languages. Asian languages are more. This is a whole lot less than I am used to. The translator next door to my office charges $0.15-0.20 per word, so I would have to agree with you - even though you are speaking in your own interest - that this is an affordable service.

I ran the index-page of SearchEngineWorld.com through the calculator and got an offer for $28.82 for English to German. That is a good price.

BUT 1: The price is for input/output in ASCII. If you want HTML, it will be more and the price is then subject to a written quotation.

BUT 2: There is not a word anywhere on the site about how SEO is handled, so I fear that keywords will be translated straight off, a dubious practise at best and a disaster at worst. In fact, web sites are not mentioned among the projects that Arlecchino has undertaken.

BUT 3: There is no customer portfolio and hence no way to check on quality.

A little note:
"Benvenuti" in Italian language is plural ... singular is "Benvenuto", so you had to say "Benvenuto ItalianArtist" ... (eh eh, a cheerful note).

Yes, Rencke, you are right, in that site there is no specialization in HTML translations, but you can send an e-mail to [e-mail] and ask the Translations Manager for this possibility.
I know that their world-wide staff of freelance translators as well as the local translators are very professional (please, note that testimonials and customer portfolios are useless if the net surfers could not talk to them directly ... and generally no real customer love to be annoyed. I think the only thing to do is to try and then check the quality.

There are quite a few SEO types editing at the ODP (dmoz.org) who'd be willing to do translations very reasonably. Even the not-so-seo-knowledgeable types would be more than willing to help and to learn in my experience.

However, my own preference has always been to use SEOs I know in those countries and barter favours.

We either ask the client to get their texts translated and we then "proof read" - for general language translation we have people in-house with SEO knowledge mastering several european languages.

I would say it differs from case to case ofther between BTC and BTB - where BTB oftens require skilled translation service.

More general consumer oriented marketing stuff can be done with good language knowledge. Large companies often have multi language support already, but strict policy about translations which often presents problems optimizing it.

IMO locals know the language, but they also know the local culuture and shopping habits. Combined with SEO and localized usability it increases conversions considerably.

I happen to translate websites with my wife (I am Italian and she is Russian, both with some years of experience in SEO) for some of my Company customer's needs. We can translate English, French, Spanish and Russian into Italian and Italian and English into Russian.

Price by arrangement, depending also on quantity: we normally charge $25-30 per page of 1900 bytes of output text (that is, $ 0.06-0.07 per word in Italian, a little more in Russian), with input/output in ASCII/Word. We can do HTML too, for a little more.

We normally work with website translations as follows:
- translate page text considering customer needs/indications about the expected target and carefully taking into account both output market SEO and general marketing needs/culture;
- translate MetaTags as text considering original ones and output page text, suggesting improvements/changes when needed;
- suggest proper title/description format for inclusion in local language directories and/or in [language] sections of international ones.
