I feel for you. I lost a #1 art site like that. It was the first online international art contest and it catered for realism, modern, mixed and digital art for more than 10 years. What made it special was that it was unique but more importantly, judged by the artists themselves.

I didn't get update notices and it was claim jumped by an Australian registry insider. By the time I bought it back its reputation had been ruined. But we didn't survive the next online art contest because just after entries closed the server died. Enough was enough... 100s of sites claiming to be an "international art contest" and art had turned to crap.

RIP

I dunno, something about the domain being swept away with the tide seems appropriate.

I once nearly lost a domain (stress “nearly”), though fortunately it was only a test site. After that I checked very very very carefully to ensure that everything I own was set to “auto-renew”.

:: scurrying off to ensure that credit card on file with registrar is current, because all the auto-renews in the world won’t help if they try to charge the card ... and fail ::

"Tide" is a feeling. The salty smell of it, the itching when used on my close to wash is horrendous . But now it is in my head. And for a while I guess, etched. And there is no walking away from this feeling.

And yes it was not on Auto renew, I disconnected the Card cause GDD was constantly raising prices in the past several years and trying to charge 2-3 years instead of just 1.

I have 16 domains I manage for SMB clients that was hooked into a system on that Card.

And when one does try to navigate thru ever changing UI on their site it is confusing AF.

As I mentioned "Shame on me".

Hurricane is coming, North East, Garden Umbrella snapped last night.

Midlife...

p.s. I do watch the headers though...

I, too, have more than one SPELL book. But there are times when they just don't help.

Take care and all the Best to you.

I too have had the experience of losing a domain when payment failed. It wasn't developed yet, but I had plans .... Fortunately I was able to buy it back. NOT a good feeling, though.

>>> set to “auto-renew”.

Yes, do set all domains to auto-renew but don't trust it 100%. I strongly recommend renewing your domains manually, well in advance, so their expiry dates are always at least a year out. Longer is better.

I must confess I came near to losing my hobby site---once. This was early daze (sic) when you could still pick up a phone and CALL and REAL LIFE HUMAN at a registrar. I begged, I wept, I groveled on bent knees (I was 10 days into the 30 day grace) and generally made such a mewly mess that the fellow on the other end finally said, "What's the new card number and expiry date, then get out of my hair!"

The second time I came near to losing a domain (client's not mine!) was due to a FIVE YEAR renewal that the client got the end date wrong. Doing due diligence along the way I asked to see the last renewal confirmation and... eyes wide!... saw it was 48 hours away and no auto renew (which would have failed on the card number alone since the card had expired the year before). "Mr. Big, we need a renewal RIGHT NOW and no more of this FIVE YEAR STUFF!"

Why? Complacency, forgetfulness---most cards change every three years, etc. etc. etc.

This year my card "expired" and I had six months left on current domain, so went ahead and renewed for an additional year, just to make sure the account was updated with the new card info.

File this under "Adventures in Webmastering---Domain Dread"

The biggest problem I run into is that there are so many notices coming from some of these registrars that it is very difficult to sort the junk from the important. I came close to missing an update for a domain that had an expired cc attached to it.

^^ that.

GG is honorably changing their UI every time I login, It is like they are running AB tests on you, and every time you almost there, there is another Upsell Ad, so one never knows...

NetSol starts bombarding with SPAM like: Here is your account standing with US as on month N.

I have been using OpenSRS to manage my domains and DNS since 2000. The problem I had some time ago was with an Australian registry. But not long ago OpenSRS took on .AU domains and the notices could not be better.

As both site owner and reseller I get separate notifications for:
- domain expiring in 90 days
- domain expiring in 60 days
- domain expiring in 30 days
- domain expiring in 10 days
- domain expiring today!

Plus I get the same service and notifications for SSL certs.

Back in 2000 we had to pass an exam (router, server, network and DNS config) to become a reseller, but today anyone can get an account. They cater for all domain name types and their DNS service is second to none.
