Host not allowing an immediate domain drop?

That's new...

On another forum's member area there are reports of at least 2 domain providers not allowing a domain to be dropped immediately anymore.

Google's recent updates decimated many newer sites and their owners decided it just wasn't worth the time to "fix" because they weren't doing anything shady. To their surprise they could remove the domain from hosting and take it offline but not drop the domain itself immediately and release ownership. They are being told to take off automatice renewal and let the domains expire when they don't renew.

Has anyone else having this happen? I don't have a domain to drop to test. If so, what reason is the host giving? Did I miss something in ICANN rules or?

You don't buy a domain name. You rent it, for one, two, three, up to ten years.

So, once a domain is registered, he can't be dropped (deleted) during the length of the lease.

This is only at the expiration of the lease, that , it can be renewed or not. Then it enters into a grace period cycle, before being deleted, and available again for someone else.

So, when you register a domain name, you have (own) it for one year (at least).

However, you can transfer it, to someone else.
