Hi all. This is a voice from the past. With the advice and help from many members of this forum, my partner and I made enough to retire early over 10 years ago. The web sites are all down now, but am just now getting around to selling the domain names and am kind of overwhelmed at the options. haven't really been on any web forums in the last decade.

I don't have anything super valuable, but together the Godaddy appraisals come to around $10K (if that means anything). The domains are on Godaddy. I was thinking of auctioning them off there or Sedo. Any thoughts on which site and what kind of auction is best? Any advice is greatly appreciated. JD

I have heard people investing in selling domains before but I have no idea how they are doing it. I am interested to know too

JD go daddy value pretty useless really. Best thing to do is try and hire a broker to sell them for you.

Sold several through Sedo. I've had good luck.

To list your domains for sale I suggest listing first with Sedo.com, and then take your exported list from Sedo and add that to Afternic.com, Dan.com and DomainAgents.com.

This will cover just about all of the domain registrar sites like Godaddy, NameCheap, Dynadot, etc. who all use APIs with one of the sites I listed to show "premium" prices for domains that people search for, premium just meaning that it is a domain for sale through a marketplace, so for example if you list a domain for $1,000 at Sedo, and somebody searches for that domain at Dynadot, then Dynadot will show "$1,000" as the "premium registration" price.

I recommend parking the domains at sales pages at either Sedo.com which boosts your promotional level with them to park with them, or with Dan.com who has the nicest sales pages and most options including payment plans and payout options.

Good luck!

( Also the industry standard rate is about 20% of the sale price as commission to the domain listing service, although Dan goes as low as 9% if the buyer buys directly from the Dan site, and 15% if somebody buys a domain parked with Sedo, 20% if not parked. In general, expect to pay 20% in commission when pricing your domains. )

Don't you just love how the registrars and resellers have become the most feral opportunists and rabid domain squatters?

With all of the new domain name types available today, it should be easy to find the best domain name for a new enterprise, right?

Well, that is if you want to pay what they call a "premium price". It seems that they have gone through all of the name possibilities and any that might be sought after, even if nothing like it already exists, can cost several thousand dollars to register and renew per year!

It is ridiculous... I understand them having a big inventory and trying to make money that way but I have seen now that the zone creators themselves now pre-reserve most of the dictionary words and the worst is I've had domain registrar websites see what I typed in and then register it themselves when I didn't complete checkout quick enough, and then try to sell it to me. I could go on forever about the corruption of GD and their monopoly over things but I will leave it there... I would love to create some kind of alternative someday to some of their services.

I've experienced that too with a UK registrar and bizarrely 4 years later they still have it for sale especially considering it was two words and 21 letters in length and realistically means nothing to any other UK business except that specific one.

And then there are the domain squatters and highjackers hiding amongst their staff.

I know this is probably too late, but I've sold a few in the past and had the best results from Flippa. Fewer buyers, of course, but the ones that are there are more likely to buy at a higher rate.
