Last night, a YouTube channel I watch regularly wrapped up a report by saying in understandable irritation: You might as well just create a website called {three-word phrase} dot com.

Naturally I looked to see if anyone really does have a site with such a name. (I always do this.)

$7.99 later, the answer was: Yup. Someone does.

Sometimes you just can't help yourself.

I once saw a client's competitor mention a new product line in a forum post. The relevant domain wasn't yet registered and I was sooooooo tempted to grab it and do something evil with it. But I didn't, because the client didn't want to cross the line between playing hard and playing dirty.

I know he was right, but part of me still slightly regrets passing up the chance to do serious mischief to a competitor.

Due to such impulses my ghost will be doomed to carrying lists of domains like Jacob Marley carried his chains.

I used to register domains based on ideas i'd overheard, without them mentioning specific domains, on the off-chance i'd turn it into something. Registering was easy, but actually turning it into a business was the challenge. My enthusiasm usually got the better of me.
After several years of renewals, and realising I wasn't going to have time to do something with each one, I slowly let the domains go free!

:: checking a hunch ::

The present site will happily accept
https://www.example.jacobmarleycarriedhischains
(where the last part is the tld) without auto-linking.

you're welcome.
8+ years ago i wrote the code that bypassed auto-linking of example domain urls for arbitrary TLDs.

I knew there was some variability in tlds--it's especially useful in Apache-type subforums where you can say things like example.old vs example.new, or example.fr vs example.uk--but I did wonder if there was a tight length limit.

It was definitely less than 8 years ago that the code was expanded to cover https:// as well, which was also a big help :)

A few years ago, I saw a TV commercial for a website with a similar name to mine. It was really competition, but I was a little miffed that the domain name was so similar.

But then I saw that they had misspelled it in the commercial! So naturally, I bought the domain name that was in the commercial and redirected it to my own website :-D
