ICANN has confirmed it is to review the sale by PIR of .ORG to Ethos Capital after receiving many questions over the deal.

Today, we sent PIR an additional information request to ensure that we have a full understanding of this proposed acquisition. We have asked PIR to provide information related to the continuity of the operations of the .ORG registry, the nature of the proposed transaction, how the proposed new ownership structure would continue to adhere to the terms of our current agreement with PIR, and how they intend to act consistently with their promises to serve the .ORG community with more than 10 million domain name registrations.

ICANN will thoroughly evaluate the responses and then ICANN has 30 additional days to provide or withhold its consent to the request.

Those relationships makes the deal smell a little off, imho.

a group of respected internet pioneers and nonprofit leaders is offering an alternative to Ethos Capital’s bid: a nonprofit cooperative corporation. The incorporation papers for the new entity, the Cooperative Corporation of .ORG Registrants, were filed this week in California.
...
“This is a better alternative,” said Esther Dyson, who served as the first chair of ICANN, from 1998 to 2000, and is one of seven directors of the new cooperative.

Just a quick update on this, and it appears Ethos made offers to commitments over the sale, and these include price limits. Having looked at it, it's still an increase above what I would have expected if it were not in it for the money.

Affordability of .ORG Domain Names: Fees charged to registrars for initial or renewal registration of a .ORG domain name will not increase by more than 10% per year on average for eight years from the start of the current Registry Agreement, under a precise formula that does not permit front-loading of those price increases. Through this commitment, .ORG will become one of the only TLDs to have a price restriction and it will remain one of the most affordable domains in the world.

10% per year on average for eight years

It's roughly doubling the price (over 8 years), isn't it ?

Slightly more than double after 8 years. (sigh)

There are not many sectors in which we see price increases of 10% per year.

Calculator over here says 2.14 (2 1/7), making it 4.6 after 16 years. Yup, that’s rough.
