Hi so there is this new mind boggling technology called blockchain domains. Can anyone in the know explain this upcoming technology and can any domain be a blockchain domain? Thanks

there is this new mind boggling technology

I don't see anything mind-blowing. Most of it seems more to be a lot of hot-air blowing as is the case with most blockchain related topics/products.

Can anyone in the know explain this

I'm not really in the know, but it seems pretty straight forward. The idea is to use a blockchain to register and track ownership of the domains. This would eliminate domain registrars and ICANN. One would own the domain outright and not be leasing from a registrar.

can any domain be a blockchain domain?

No. Only domains with TLD's that are blockchain tld and given that there is absolutely no buy in on the part of ICANN users will be unable to access the domain from their browser without the addition of a pluggin or other software.

My expertise on this topic comes from reading this single article:

The one point of interest in my view is this:

Why are blockchain domains created?
...
The second advantage relates to content, mainly. Blockchain domains can’t be blocked or censored. Now, the registrar has the right to revoke your domain following court decisions (or even without a court decision). In the future, it could hardly be possible with blockchain-based domains. The domain is your asset. You are the sole owner of it and have complete control over it.

But it seems unlikely that ICANN will relinquish it control over the internet to this technology. So will spawn a shadow-web?

Hello-
So will spawn a shadow-web?

Blockchain Domain names are allowing the Darknet to be more user-friendly .

I admit I’m not upto date on blockchain. I’ll do some reading. But the idea of no registrar control, censorship, seems to me this concept may become mainstream in maybe a decade? If browsers support this standard?
