Why canīt edit DNS zone on my registrar?

The zone file is unavailable because the domain's set nameservers do not ..

Today tried to edit some MX records. So went to my registrar and logged in.

I was surprised to see this:

"The zone file is unavailable because the domain's set nameservers do not belong to this registrar".

I have some domains registred on this VERY very well known registrar. Some time ago I added privacy to that domain (service offered by themselves). I clearly remember that the DNS zone was available then. But not I get "The zone file is unavailable because the domain's set nameservers do not belong to this registrar".

Called support and they told me that`s because my dns are delegated (pointing to my hosting company).
So the guy told me: make whatever changes you need from your hosting Cpanel, in DNS area.

To me sounded that has nothing to do with the issue.
I never hosted a site with my registrar, and always had the dns zone available.

Whatīs really happening?

This could happen if you use a free DNS service provided by a Registrar. If that is the case then this Registrar has further put restrictions to not allow editing of the Zone until you revert the domain's Name Servers back to the ones they require. This is not a good practice as it will not allow you to populate the Zone prior to moving DNS to this Registrar.

It's not the case. It's a paid domain o Godaddy. So my questions stands.

Review the information listed at [in.godaddy.com...] Your case is Domain Registered with GoDaddy but not using their nameservers. As you can see here, they don't support this case, so you will have use their nameservers to make your DNS editing work.
