Last night I bought a domain name from Tucows.
It was expired, I owned it for a few hours, then they refunded me and I lost it....
Is that legal?
The payment went through paypal also, I authorized it ect...
Can they do that?

Obviously they can since they did, but have you asked for an explanation? I can envision several reasons how the transaction might have been voided.... but that is only speculation on my part.

Well...didn't we enter into a contract when I paid?
I know they reversed the order, but are they allowed to do that?
Isn't against the rules to cancel a booking of a domain name?
There are all sorts of things that can happen. For example if they sold the domain, but the original owner was still within their grace period to recover the name, then you could lose it. There are no explicit laws about this that I know of for this, but I'm not a lawyer. Disputes between you and the registrar would probably need to be taken up with ICANN and you would need legal council.

Too many of these registrars place "expired" but still in grace period domains on the market. If the domain holder makes good, and many of them do once their site goes "dark", any sale would be tentative at best and reversible at worst. There are also examples of domains being listed as expired which are still in force (had that happen to me!) due to glitch or error.

Ok, thanks guys, so basically, nothing I can do, the name had 103 000 inbound links and a PR6...related to my industry also...too bad!

Yikes! That would have been nice.
When I shop expired I look at the expiration date and add 25 days to find my potential purchase date. Most sites that go dark are because of bad paperwork, negligence, death (and resulting probate), or other confusion and will generally correct that condition by that time---and still have another five days to complete. If I lose in that short period it is just part of the game we play, meanwhile I have not tied up, nor invested effort in, any time or monies ... we're not talking about a lot of money, but time and effort you cannot get back!
