When Should a Start Up Deploy Cash to Acquire its Perfect Domain?

Does loss of brand building momentum argue for a "buy now" strategy?

An interesting entrepreneurial story:
How I Blew 50 Grand On My Journey For The Perfect Domain Name

When do you go all in on brand building?

When you delay making the "address move" might it cost your brand more than some extra bucks?

Interesting tale.

Quite a bit of naivety and lack of forethought/action comes to mind here. All he/they've done in growing their brand is make the domainer's name stock worth even more and they've paid the price.

About the time they name the business. It's not a new world anymore, the time to act is before you have to spend a pile of cash unnecessarily. Business/brand Naming should include the search for domain name from the beginning.

Just my opinion

Heck, even in the "old daze of B&M" (sic) one needed a name search for a DBA (doing business as) to be able to open a business on "main street" just to get permits, etc. before the doors open.

Web presence is identical. Any who neglect that necessary step are going to have grief later.

Meanwhile, that perfect name should be YOUR BRAND or IDENTITY and you can do that before the fact and never pay a ransom to a domain squatter.

Agreed. If you can't get the domain name then, strongly consider naming the business something else. I would even say that if you can't get the .com version, name the business something else.

When we were looking to change our name (to reflect the expanded market we were targeting), we bought the .com version before we made any public changes. We ended up going with our 3rd or 4th name choice because the .COMs were gone for the other names.
