If I was to create a social network similar to Facebook that was much faster and offers other services that attract users and I bought a domain that is similar to Facebook.com, for example facebbok.com of fasebook.com. Would I be in trouble for copyright?

This is not copyright but trademark.

Fortunately the question is entirely academic.

Even if it is legal, can you afford the legal battle that will ensue?

Assuming that you have a fortune to spend on lawyers the result will vary by jurisdiction and ICANN may decide against you even if your local courts say that it is OK.

Incidentally, I looked it up. One of the two selected typo domains already belongs to facebook. You don't get to rule the social-media universe by being dim.

That is more to do with spending venture capital (other people's money) than acumen.

Bad idea.
