Landing page or Redirect

Hi all
we have a client who purchased a company and decided to re- brand the company(also registering a new domain) and sell the same product offering while maintaining control of the old companies domain name.

Would it be better from and SEO perspective to simply redirect the old domain to the new or create a landing page on the old explaining the company has been sold and then provide the link to the new website.

Any Insight would be most appreciated

you need to analyze the inbound link profile to the old domain and figure out how to best retain that link equity.
are you maintaining a similar url structure on the new site?

If you redirect also have a custom 404 page with a link to catch anything that the redirect has managed to miss
