I keep coming across comments suggesting that there will be a play for dominance . . err . . control of the X X X gTLD IF it is ever fully and finally accepted by ICANN.

I'm thinking it will play out like this. .

The X X X gTLD launch tension will build to unbearable, at which point there will be a near climatic event, with people readying to discharge large amounts of money and insert all available capital into X X X, and . . just at that moment . . by some impossible stroke of genius at the 11th hour and 59th minute . . ICANN will abruptly go cold on the idea, insisting on everyone pulling out and well . .

How would the launch work per say? An auction for every name? I'd buy a name at launch just on the grounds that I think someone else would want it but wouldn't think to get it on launch day.

Most new gTLD launches start with a ~"sunrise period" during which trademark holders file claims for first rights to their protected brand.

In some cases there have been auctions of reserved or presumably "prime domains". This, I believe, was how the launch of .mobi was handled.

Yep however I feel it's a bit much to expect trademark holders to HAVE to purchase cocacola.x x x, apple.x x x, bmw.x x x, sony.x x x etc.

There is actually an x x x site on mycompanydomain.net however it does no good whatsoever!

Surely trademarked names like these should not be compelled to purchase their own.x x x, mind you vaticancity.x x x may be quite happy to do so:-)

Perhaps the Sunrise phase will be renamed Foreplay but the end result for trademark holders will be the same.

I was renewing my domains when I asked the sales guy at the registrar if he had any info on when .ExExEx is coming out. He said the rumor is Summer of 2011.

Then today on CNBC radio, they were talking about Google TV when the speaker brought up the topic on p.o.r.n … but then mentioned that over 40% of the internet bandwidth is used on p.o.r.n sites.

Is that true? And if so, then how big do you think the ExExEx auction is going to be?

I remember someone said the .asia domains are worth 10% of the .coms which I don’t think is true. But for some reason I feel that it may be true for .ExExEx extension if not more.

Do we really need any more p.o.r.n. sites or is this a genuine attempt to try and move them sideways supposedly to move them out of the reach of kids and those who genuinely do not want to accidentally see it?

HP: I personally dont think the TLD will encourage or generate more p.o.r.n sites. I'm not in the adult entertainment business at all as you know, however, would like to buy 2 domains (ethnicity, nationality) and simply park it.

I own a trademark that's an ethnicity (and yes, you can own such a trademark but cant sue or protect your trademark from being used since its a common word) and that is why I am waiting for the sunrise period for this TLD.

I am awaiting to follow the auction and see how ridiculous amount of money people will offer for names...

.Com is built into mobile phone keyboards
.Com has the most consumer awareness
There's evidence that .Com outranks all specialty domains including .travel and .mobi and .aero

And I'm going with no. .#*$! will not be default on any browser or phone. .#*$! is not likely to get better SE positioning. .#*$! is more likely to be filtered completely in foreign countries like Germany. .#*$! will feature another set of policies and guidelines to which we have to adhere to (like our current Visa & banking guidelines). There is very little evidence that would support a successful mandate of .#*$! in the adult world.

I agree with you. But I think that the x.x.x tld may have more type-in traffic cause people will start typing in random names/ethnicity + x.x.x rather than use search engines.
