Earthlink etc...
The above message was at the bottom of every search result on Dmoz for WEEKS... until Dec 4th.

This new message appeared for a few days after Dec 3rd

This message is now again present.
Based on explanations from corresponding with Dmoz editors'...

The Dmoz "RDF dump" has not been working, "THOUSANDS" of websites HAVE actually been Added or Modified since the last Update.

The RDF dump will allow members of the public - with Licenses to "freely" download the ODP index if they agree to their terms.

It takes Dmoz one week to verify if the updates are successful - If not- the last udated date will again re-appear at the bottom of the search listings

There is a Dmoz url where one can check anytime to see if an individual directory has been updated.

Now their editor's forum is giving database error messages.

The Resource Zone isn't run by the ODP... it's a privately owned and operated forum, that was created by editors (not the ODP) to better facilitate communication with users.

It has nothing to do with dmoz.org, the RDF, or any other official ODP function.

Getting in Dmoz will POTENTIALLY get your site listed in the following directories -

[dmoz.org...]

This may explain the jump in PageRank a listed site can potentially get!

This is one cause of the useful PR boost of a dmoz link, although it should be noted that the homepage PR of the vast majority of these sites is pretty low. Also, lots of these sites only update their copy of the directory rarely if ever, so many will not include recently included sites.

A noticeable change is happening in DMOZ:

RDF tags used in the current RDF files (2003-02-13)

(However, Dir.google.com has still not updated - so websites are not being fully credited).

It will probably take a month or so for the results to show in dir.google.com and the ODP has no control whatsoever over the schedule that Google (or for that matter, any of the other sites that re-use ODP data) may have.

New Dmoz Updates:

RDF tags used in the current RDF files (2003-02-19)

It seems that the bigges PageRank increase occurs when Google spiders the Dmoz Directory and credits a given site with it's link.

I have yet to see an increase in PageRank for any sits that has been listed by Dmoz - However, the jump is noticeable once Google's Directory lists it.

This may be partially be a result of the extra "keywords" that Google adds to the websites' description taken from the Dmoz editors' description for added sites.

Yes, two new full RDF dumps in the last week, right after the initial special nocatid version, the week before: see rdf.dmoz.org for more.

What are Dmoz's ranking algorithms?

unlike the directory - doing a Dmoz searcb will return websites in some order!

Is the assigned Title a priority - how much does the editor's description play.

How much does the catagory and subcatagory play?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dmoz is making up for lost time!
GOOGLE - where are you?!
The dmoz search is mainly for the benefit of the editors and there is little evidence that significant numbers of the public use it - so I really wouldn't worry.
AFAIK, the primary ranking methodology is by the cat name, so that an editor can easily find the appropriate cat to send a misplaced submission. The top result in the listings will be from the top cat name.
dmoz is not a search engine, it's a directory. Worry about whether you're in the most appropriate cat for your site rather than where you come in the search results.
>> What are Dmoz's ranking algorithms? <<
There are no ranks. There is no algorithm. We just list sites, categorised by subject.
>> GOOGLE - where are you?! <<
Google used to take a copy of the RDF dump towards the end of each month, but the results didn't show up for at least several weeks.
My guess is that you will see something by middle to late March, but that is complete speculation.
If you're interested, you can find the code for the ODP search here:
The funny thing is that Google have a similar file sitting in a similar directory giving their code for searching too. It's just that no-one thought to look there yet...
[only joking ;)]
