Template files for the Gantry Framework?

I usually use another product for templates. However, I'm working with a site built using Gantry.

The site was developed by someone else who went AWOL and I took over.

My question is, is there a 'source file' for the template that the site is running on. ? When I use Artisteer, there is a file that is created with the WYSIWYG editor. If you want to make changes to the template, you edit that and re-export the template as a zip file.

From what I've seen of Gantry, I'm not sure it works the same way. I might be wrong but it seems that the layout is configured on the fly with the gantry control panel.

My questions:

1. If you have a functioning Joomla site build around Gantry, do you also need any kind of file that holds the definitions for the layout so that you can update/edit in the future.

2. If you do need a file with the template layout, can you get it back from the site itself?

I don't use Gantry or Joomla, so I'm not much good here, but...

Gantry looks to be sort of like a hybrid between the Wordpress idea of a framework (Genesis, Thesis, etc) and an HTML framework (Zurb, Bootstrap, etc).

In terms of question #1, Gantry uses LESS, so you'll probably want to run a LESS preprocessor and work from the LESS files. Once again, though, I use SASS and I don't really know LESS (though I believe Bootstrap now uses LESS).
