I have not really built a wordpress site before. Most of the CMS sites I build are e-commerce and I tend to use specific cart CMS solutions like opencart.

Anyway a builder mate wants a site so I figured I would use wordpress.

He just needs a picture gallery theme really, but everyone I look at does not seem to 'fit'

He will be posting images of past jobs, so all the images need to be grouped in categories, with each category having its own landing page with thumbnails.

Every picture gallery theme I have looked at seems to treat individual photos as posts and does not place so much emphasis on categories.

I don't really want to have to customise too much due to my lack of wordpress experience and this being a 'job for a friend' which I don't want to waste too much time on.

Anyway If anyone else has done a similar site in wordpress and has any knowledge they can pass on, I would be very appreciative.

Well, nobody else took this, so...

If I didn't want the images to be posts, I would just use the standard Wordpress image uploader and get one of the Lightbox plugins to allow a sort of slideshow presentation.

I'm sure there are better gallery solutions for Worpdress, but generally I simply don't use Wordpress if a gallery is an important feature of the site.
