A number of people [google.com] are reporting issues upgrading to WP 2.9 using auto-upgrade.

One guy reported doing five upgrades without problem and then failing on the two.

The old manual method works without problems in all cases. The automatic method sometimes gets hung up. If you're lucky, you can just resume it, but some people are getting caught in an intermediate stage.

So before upgrading back up your database

Personally, unless there are security fixes, I never upgrade until version X.X.1

Am with you on delaying upgrades unless they are security ones. Good time to remind people to have a proper backup strategy and learn how to roll back/restore. I have seen people make backups but then don't know how to use them to restore their website when the crisis hits.
Don't think the new features in 2.9 are worth rushing into upgrading.

Tip. Always disable plugins before you auto-upgrade AND make a back up of your db as ergophobe noted. I've completed several upgrades to v2.9 and no issues - yet. :)
