I'm looking for a free open source cms that supports several hundred subdomains.

Basic requiremens are:
- one software installation for all subdomains
- one database for all subdomains
- easy to use cms

Which cms should be used to fulfill these requirements.

Thanks for all recommendations.

If you want one DB for each subdomain, I would go for WordpressMU.

The next version will be a total merge with Wordpress, so you'll be able to leverage all the plugins and community support of WP and more and more WP is a real CMS (user levels, permissions and so on). If you need complex workflows and such, it's not really the tool for the job though.

Drupal also has multisite capability built in, but I find it to be a major hassle until they streamline the update process. In it's current form, applying security fixes over hundreds of sites would be a huge hassle.

BTW, I just realized - important question: Is each subdomain an independent but related site or sections of the same site if you know what I mean?
