I'll work on getting a new site for our local sports club. For content management purpose I need something that won't take long to get a few non-web-design oriented people to learn how to make changes or add new content. It has to be idiot proof so new people can always jump in as others leave.

I don't care about APIs or any developing stuff, but only about what comes in the package which has to be totally free.
I don't have much time for learning, so it would be nice if it works out from box.

I see regular posts about Drupal and Joomla and I know they're very popular. Would they be something to consider? Are they heavy, slow...?

And yes, security would be another point I would look into as seeing site broken in would make folks around feel helpless.

I always run my sites on Apache, I use some PHP, and always use CSS. I use Dreamweaver for my own site development.

Any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Thanks

You may be better considering a GUI editor that you can install on the pages that will need to be changed. There are lots of these around that can be used to set up editable areas on specific pages. (I use TDE website editor for this.)

our local sports club.

You say "our" local sports club so I am basing this on the premise that you will be doing this on the cheap or as a favour. If you install a system that takes a bit of training (like Joomla or Drupal) you will be creating something that may come back and haunt you in the future.

Sometimes you will have less hassle by just committing to making the changes yourself.

At this stage of the search I'd suggest you visit the opensourceCMS site and try out several of the systems to see whether they meet your requirements.

For free. I'm on the board and would like to implement something anyone could handle it down the road as parents switch as their kids grow.

"Bite back" is the exact reason why I wanted to check on this and hear oppinions and suggestions.

opensourceCMS

I will take a look into it today.

Thanks

Joomla could be used for this.

Also I would look at a blogging platform like WordPress. It allows pages to be written, along with blog posts, and it's not hard to add a gallery to it for photos.

If you install a system that takes a bit of training (like Joomla or Drupal) you will be creating something that may come back and haunt you in the future.
By the same token, however, building a system that is widely used can save you a lot of headaches. What's nice about a Drupal or Wordpress is that often you can simply plug an error message into your web search engine of choice and find the fix, or at least get clues as to the cause. If you build something yourself, there is always the chance that a stray bracket somewhere in the code borks everything and takes you hours to find and correct.
