Using FTP, you should place the new theme in your wp-content/themes directory. Then log in to the administration page and go to Design then Themes. You should see the new theme there under Available Themes and the old theme still activated under Current Theme. Click on the title of the new theme you want under Available themes and you should get a popup that shows you what your webpage looks like with the new theme. In the top right corner of the popup window is Activate theme. Click this to switch themes.

You do not need to delete old themes through FTP. You can just activate the new theme you want and the old ones will just be in Available themes. I suspect you didnt change themes and activate it through the administration page after you FTPed the new theme. Do this and it should solve your problem

Perhaps you FTPed into the wrong directory. You shouldnt delete a theme by FTP until after you deactivate it. I think you should double check that you are FTPing the new theme into the correct directory. If the theme needs to be unpacked, do that before you upload it.
Try another theme and see if that uploads and is visible in the backend.

Place the active deleted theme back into the directory and then try deactivating it. Perhaps deleting the active theme caused this problem.

You can also try deactivating any plugins temporarily to make sure they are not interfering with the backend display and try uploading and activating a new theme.

thats about all i can think of.

good luck.

Do you have a plugin installed like Supercache or something? You may need to clear the cache in that case.
