The Google Summer of Code winners have been announced and G is giving $100,000 to sponsor 21 drupal-related projects. Many other content management-related projects figure in the mix - Joomla (15 projects), Plone, Geeklog, Wordpress, Gallery.

On the drupal end, the Security Scanner for the SimpleTest module (for unit testing of Drupal code) should make for more secure releases. In theory, the unit testing for drupal is intended to push back code freeze on new releases as (again in theory), a much shorter alpha/beta/release candidate period should be needed if there's good unit testing available. The total for drupal adds up to $100K [drupal.org]. It makes one wonder what the cost of developing Drupal and all of its modules would be if all the donated time and money were figured at even say $20/hour.

Joomla also gets 15 projects, notably unit testing. Other Joomla projects will include Content Type Management, Tagging, Article Versioning.

Wordpress has 8 projects with an emphasis on performance (performance, caching, storage).

Geeklog has a handful of projects and Gallery scores 2
