Personally I use Postnuke (not to be confused with phpnuke)and I am happy with it. Others that are commonly mentioned Joomla/Mambo and Drupal.
You might also want to mention what you are looking to do so people can give you better recomendations.
To get a good recommendation, you need to be very sure of what the end result is, for your site.
List the features you want -- for example, do you want the CMS to provide your students and faculty with their own space?
Do you want to be able to show courses, registration etc?
What are the programming skills available to you?
What sort of cost are you looking at?
