A division of Google, Jigsaw, has developed a machine learning technology, dubbed "Perspective", which is aimed at managing and moderating toxic user generated comments.
The technology, although still in development, is available to any publisher that wants it.

The system learns by seeing how thousands of online conversations have been moderated and then scores new comments by assessing how "toxic" they are and whether similar language had led other people to leave conversations. What it's doing is trying to improve the quality of debate and make sure people aren't put off from joining in. Google "Perspective" Machine Learning To Hide Toxic Comments [bbc.co.uk]

One day, men will no longer have to do anything, you have bots posting automatically, and bots moderating automatically, so soon bots will just chat with each other and feed discussions online,...

I wonder what Jigsaw will consider "toxic" language?

And further, if someone high up on the ladder at Google disagrees, what then?

Sadly, when I think of toxic comments* the first thing that comes to mind is the posts that begin “My mother’s cousin’s friend makes 97$ an hour at Google” ...

* I do not spend much time reading YouTube comment sections.

I assume, Lucy, that it will be programmable and phrases such can be added, or learnt.

The name Google "Perspective" must be another one of google's ironic jokes/warped jokes. This isnt about spam this is about censorship plain and simple.

Well if someone starts posting toxic and spammy comments on my site, they will be censored by me, if this tool helps me do that, then to that end, yes Absolutely.

If you are implying that big evil Google is censoring the web to ensure its global domination, then I would strongly urge you to follow the link at the bottom of the op, to take look at what this project is really all about.

A vague statement, stuffed with superlatives. What project exactly? Worrying how? How exactly is this "bad"? Who or what is being manipulated?

Great arguments Jambam!

I agree it is really horrible when big multinational conglomerates and other large institutions engage in such contentious things. Someone should really take a stand against these moron that believe in things like this. I would go even further, we should rally together take a stand against this gross injustice.
