Baidu's Reputation Problem in China Gives Google a Chance [m.calcalistech.com]
Baidu may be the unchallenged market leader in China, but users in the country believe the search engine to be overly commercialized and ethically challenged

Interesting article, but the conclusion seems to be that China could do very well without Google as they've proven over the past eight years. Although Baidu has done some ethically challenged things over the years, at least they're Chinese, and that may make more difference in that market.

While there are reputation issues with Baidu, this is true for the rest of China's large tech companies. Tencent is known for cooperating with the CCP and giving chat transcripts and recordings of Wechat and QQ, used in court proceedings. Alibaba is well known for their fake merchandise and IP theft. Pinduoduo has been charged for IP theft and fakes in New York, where they recently registered for an IPO.

This type of behaviour is pretty common in China. I really do not think it negatively impacts their reputation. Chinese people expect this from all companies. There is very little the regular Chinese person can do. If you want search, For Chinese language, Baidu is really the only good search engine. If you search for English, or want info outside of China, Google is required and Baidu is terrible.

The cleaving of China and non-China information is very clear here. I really see no bridging of both worlds. My Chinese friends who do not speak English have no need for Google. Google's impact in China will need to be in Chinese,
