Alexa Ranking

Either my competitors are lying or......

I have a competitor who claims 15000 uniques/day. My site sees approximately 2000/day.

My Alexa ranking is better.

I have another competitor who I'm certain has significantly more traffic than my site. Yet, their Alexa ranking is only about 10K better than mine and there are some days my site beats them outright.

Would anyone care to post Their Alexa Ranking and visits/day so I could get a feel for the proper range?

If their site has more Alexa users their Alexa ranking will be higher and v.v.

MBennie, to expand on what Visit Thailand said, your Alexa data is influenced by the number of users who have the toolbar running. For very high volume sites in similar industries, the numbers may be statistically comparable. But for lower volume sites, a small number of users can make a difference. Your use of the toolbar might itself skew the data a little, or even a lot. (Someone posted a note a while back that the sites suggested by Alexa as being similar to his own site appeared to be based solely on his own browsing habits.) The bottom line is, don't get too carried away with comparisons unless you (and your competitors) are really high volume sites.

Yes, I understand how Alexa figures it's stats. Page Views are factored in as well as # of visitors etc....

I am talking about 3 sites...

My Site 27,072 - 2000-2500 uniques/day average # of page views

Competitor A: 33,275 Claims 15,000 uniques/day. Average # of page views.

Competitor B: 18,068 Average # of page views but has significant amounts of traffic.

Obviously there is a serious discrepancy and I'm trying to figure out if it's my log analyzer or lying competition.

If anyone would care to post their numbers as I previously requested that would be very helpful.

Your log analyzer reports visitors based upon actual hits to your server. Identifying unique visitors and paths taken througout your web site becomes tricky if you don't use cookies, or a javascript tracking scheme like hitbox.

Alexa ratings are an extrapolation. One user here reported that he installed the toolbar on ONE computer in his office, and just from his one computer using it, the company's Alexa ranking jumped a several thousand.

Alexa data is an extrapolation (i.e. guesstimate).

My preference is for real world hits on my server as this is the most accurate measurement of traffic to your web site.

One of my sites:
- Alexa rank = 105,369
- logs = 4500-7000 uniques/day (average 5500)

Demographic is not likely to be sporting an Alexa toolbar

There are masses of examples on the WebmasterWorld site search. eg

[webmasterworld.com...]

If you do the straight search for Alexa in the site search and wade through the threads you can draw up a chart for yourself of any link between Alexa rank and and traffic

You could even post the chart here when you have it ;)

At this URL: www.sillyjokes.co.uk/alexa/
there is a chart showing the relationship between Alexa rank and number of visitors.

Another way to look at guessing traffic based on Alexa is to take 100,000,000 (100 million) and divide it by the rank.

For Example:

100,000,000/28,000(rank)=3571 visitors/day

Not perfect but a quick guess...
