Do Google Analytics filters apply to past data?

I've been using Google Analytics for a few months on my new site. Just the other day, I added a filter to filter my own IP address—something that I should have done at the start.

Does Analytics start to filter my visits from the day that I set up the filter, or does it filter my visits from all past data?

No, past data is not filtered.

And data that is filtered cannot be recovered. So it is recommended to create three properties for each domain. One with no filters, one with filters that you use for the day to day business, and then one as a test platform, such that you can test new filters and settings without putting your data at risk. Once a setting/filter is tested, you can move it over to the day to day account.

NickMNS, if I create three different properties, does this mean that I will have to add three different analytics codes to my site?

Does each property have its own code?

Sorry if a stupid question.

No. It has been a while since I set this up in may account but if I am not mistaken the settings are done simply in GA, you do not need to touch the code at all.
