Is Google Analytics Tracking Correctly?

I inherited a website along with Google Analytics implemented on a specific page of the site. This is what the particular code looked like.

example.com/index.php/borrower-types/20000-dollar-bonus

I assume the person who previously set it up was trying to track something, but I don't know the details. I have since removed the string index.php/borrower-types/20000-dollar-bonus to just example.com.

My question is, is GA correctly tracking visitor numbers to the site? The reason I ask is that I use Awstats as I was told it is more reliable way to count visitor numbers. When I compare the two, AWstats and GA report wild different numbers. Which is right?

I like GA, but I can't rely on the numbers when I compare it to AWstats, and because it's so off, it doesn't seem relevant?

Can you clarify? If the Google code is on a page, it will track correctly. Of course, if it is only on that specific page, then the numbers won't compare. However, you can't compare numbers fro JavaScript-based tracker like Google with log analysers like AW Stats - they're not measuring the same thing.
