The PHP on my site recognises referrals from Twitter (t.co URls) but Google Analytics does not.
Why is that?

Google Analytics is a property/service of Google Inc. so services of that conglomerate will be perfectly identified, valued and ranked. Otherwise, companies of another shareholders will be not processed with the same diligence and even with some kind of lazyness. Unless you believe in some old tales about evilness. :-)
