Can't make sense of my statistics

confused about 'impressions' and 'avg position'

8:51 am on Nov 13, 2012 (gmt 0)

Up to 28th of oct everything went reasonably well with my website. then suddenly I was sunk: no more impressions, no clicks - nothing. I was still indexed though.

Now, apparently some of my keywords are back on the first page of google - according to the info in webmaster tools: 'avg.position', but still I have ridiculously low impressions - like 35 or so. Before it was several hundred.

Also, when I check manually, some of the keywords that are supposedly on page one are not there at all.

But even for those keywords that have returned to page one I only get 1 or 2 visitors a day.

Is someone here who can help me make sense of this?

Your past data (prior to 28th of October) may influence your averages. Try the following:
- shorten the period to the week when you said you did not rank
- Look at the "Web" only (do not include images)

If you still get the data that does not make sense, try to filter down by country - you may be ranking in country that is not interested in clicking to your site

The avg positions shown in GWT mean nothing, pay no attention to them. Normally, filtering to only Web and the Country you are targeting would give you useful information, but recently they are showing a lot of 1.0 avg. positions that do not relate to any other information either from GWT or serps. Like you, I wish that someone could explain this to make sense of it, but the situation is not unique is all I can tell you.

thanks guys, your help is much appreciated!
I figured that the 'avg position' means nothing because I use the rank checker tool in firefox that gives a much more precise picture.
