I take a quick look at the "sites that link to you" section of google's wmt and get hit in the face by 14 brand-new links.
I am small. Fourteen links from a single site is not going to slip under the radar. Numbers in this range generally mean a people-finder type site where they've got search results for every possible name from the e-books, plus possibly one or two Canadian politicians.
But in this case I know for a fact that the site in question doesn't link to me fourteen times, because I made that other site. It links to me once. (And I link to them twice. When you mention someone by name, it would be unnatural not to link.)
Closer inspection reveals
:: drumroll ::
thirteen links to piwik.php. (Aside for those who don't know: piwik uses a single database that lives on one of your sites. Other sites feed into the same database via a snippet of tracking code.)
I mean, honestly. I realize all this information is collected by a stupid robot that doesn't know anything. But it's much of a muchness with the way javascript-literate robots always try to crawl the piwik file.
Do you suppose the googlebot sees your GA tracking code and tries to crawl its own home base? Show of hands...
Sigh.
