How to tell who is doing the searches?

Is there a tool available to show the domain of the searcher?

I have a client who sells a specialized industrial product. The product is used in an important new process. The process is getting a lot of press lately.

When doing KW research it struck me that many of the searches per month may be from media types and academics who are researching the product-- and not industry buyers who we want to target.

Is there a free tool that can tell me the domain of who is searching for a particular KW?

I should have made it clear that this research is for a new site. So there are no statistics for keywords available through Google Analytics or other similar applications.

There is no guaranteed method to identify who. What you can identify, from server logs, is the ip, and you can sometimes trace that. However, there may be privacy issues, depending on where you are located.

Oh, of course, there are tools to process multiple IPs, but the data may be of limited value. My best suggestion would be for you to try a sample and see how much data is gives you and decide if it is worthwhile setting that up to process regularly.
