Strange activity from Google in my logs

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place, i couldn't see a relevant forum for it, but i am tearing my hair out with these strange goings on and hope someone can shed some light on it!

Basically, I've recently seen lots of strange visits from google to my site - according to the IPRange (209.85.224...) it is apparently google. These run to hundreds a day from varying IP Addresses in that range and the referrer 90% of the time appears to be a simple google search on my site name, as follows -

google.com /search?hl=en&q=my+site+name

and the rest of the time is a search on keywords relevant to my site such as

google.com /search?hl=en&q=bt+hudson+1500+problems

however these keywords are not ones which anyone have ever used before to get to my site, according to my logs and analytics AND the pages that is being requested is NOT related to the keyword in any way, it is almost random.

Also, the visit does not appear in analytics for the time my own logs show that they visited - confirming that is is some kind of google activity.

Also, interestingly from the same IP addresses are lots of hits where the referrer is 'http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?action=like&channel_url=..'

It should be noted that i do run adwords and it may well be something to do with that, but the keywords in the referrer string are not keywords that are in my adwords account, and the fact that that the keywords do not reflect the page visited just makes this baffling!

Has any body got any clues as to what might be going on?

What user agent string is given for these requests?

There are a variety of bots and some human activity coming from Google IP ranges. You'd be surprised at the range of user agents that can be seen.

Are they this type [facebook.com] of facebook link or something entirely different? (Your logs will show "externalhit_uatext".) Those means that the page image has been seen by a human, but it's routed via facebook so it appears to be a robot. Which is pretty exasperating if you're trying to keep track of which is which.
