Google Webmaster Tools says that at my site, pages take 8.6 sec to load, slower than 91% of sites.

Alexa: Average Load Time is Very Fast (0.32 Seconds), 87% of sites are slower.

Can anyone explain the extreme discrepancy between the two?

I suppose the only metrics that count are Googles. My developer has worked a lot on the site to improve speed but, thus far, nothing has changed in the report.

Info: WordPress, using Virtual Private Server

I would trust Google's measurement before Alexa.

Have you implemented the new tracking code for Site Speed?

Measure Page Load Time with Site Speed Analytics Report
[Analytics.BlogSpot.com...]

In order for the Site Speed reports to work, you must make a change to your tracking code. The change is a simple insertion of one additional method:
_trackPageLoadTime();

No, but I'll have my web developer do so.

As I've stated elsewhere, I've gotten hit very badly by Panda. Hopefully speeding up the site will improve things a bit.
