Analyzers only as good as your logs?

of course they are, but are there work-arounds?

My previous host used Webaliser, which was fine, all I needed.

However my new host, while also using Webaliser, has a different set-up. The "Top 30 referrers" list includes local referrers (pages within my site) so my list is mostly my own pages with one or two outside referrers. It's useless to me; with my previous host, it listed only outside referrers and I learned a lot from it.

My question is, if I use a different log analyzer, like Analog or Weblog Expert, can it provide me with the referrer information I want? Or am I stuck with what I get because it's a log problem and not an analyzer problem? Can I configure my own log analyzer to give me what I want?

Sorry to make my first post so long-winded.

kaycee.

sounds like a problem with the way they have set up the default settings of Webbalizer for you. Most analysis programs allow you to ignore internal pages in their referral reports.

Our host allows us to upload our own confirguration files for Analog, overwriting their very simple one-size-fits-all default configuration for their automated report system. You could ask your host. I am sure thay would have been asked before.

If you are getting referal data as you are, your raw logs are OK, its just the way Webbalizer is set up to report. I would guess there are hundreds of options.

If you need "serious" reports, one of the best solutions is to download the raw access logs yourself, and then analyse them locally on your computer using whatever analyser package (and whatever options!) you want. It will take a little bit of time to learn the program however and dowload the logs when you need them.

Some hosts dont allow access to raw logs.

Best advice. Email your host!

Thanks for that. You're right. I went ahead and downloaded a free analyzer, Web Expert Lite, and my access logs. It tells me everything I need to know, and more.

Sorry about that. I misspoke. Actual name is Weblog Expert Lite. I downloaded mine from [webattack.com ] but you can check it out at [weblogexpert.com ].
Lite is a stripped down version of their commercial product.

From their site..

The program features intuitive interface that provides a steep learning curve.

Who said there isn't any honesty on the Web :)

Thanks I got it! :)

It doesn't show everything I want but it now is a way to pull the data off the server for greater analysis.

My webserver has a great program, but it lacks in some areas.

The Freebie script MecaLogs is great for the site owner to see his stats and for me when I want to see current activity.

For analysis, this might be want I'm looking for.

Thanks again.:)

I think they call that a Freudian typo. :)

Yeah, there's a few things missing. It took me a couple hours to go from "it gives me everything I want" to "I want more" :) Isn't it always the way? There's a few things in the commercial version that I'd now like to have, but maybe my host's webalizer will fill in the gaps.

It's amazing how addictive log stats are even for guys like me who have small sites.
